cont’d……awareness for health problems that disproportionately impact low income girls, and to create opportunities for girls who wouldn’t otherwise have them.
5 Reasons Why We Run
Health & Wellness – Entering adolescence, girls tend to stop engaging in as much physical activity as they did in late childhood, and by 18-19 years old, many girls engage in virtually no physical activity. The drop off is substantially more sharp among minority girls (A 2002 Health Study showed 56 percent of the black girls and 31 percent of the white girls reported no habitual leisure-time activity by age 17). Being inactive as an adult is related to substantial risk of serious health conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Many of these conditions also disproportionately affect minorities. (New England Journal of Medicine, 2002). There is some good news though>>>Research suggests that helping girls develop active lifestyles as adolescents facilitates them continuing that active lifestyle into adulthood.
