What’s the Big Deal W/ Fragrance-free?
Glad you asked! Fragrance-free is generally perceived as a better option for curlies who have known allergies or sensitivities. If you are generally weary of trying new products because you may experience redness, patchiness, itchiness or just an unpleasant sensation, going fragrance-free should be a strong consideration. Fragrances, which are added aromas, typically contain chemical compounds that include a blend of essential oils and or synthetic aromas. With it being a blend, it is often-times very difficult, and sometimes impossible to isolate what ingredient is causing the irritation. This is why it is highly recommended to do a sensitivity patch test on your skin, allowing a 24 hour window to see how your skin responds.
Our fragrance-free option is a safer alternative for young curlies, who generally have sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It’s important to note that high-quality fragrances, such as those found in TréLuxe products don’t include phthalates or parabens, which are often irritable ingredients.
Great Info! So, I Don’t Have to Worry About a Scent?
Hmm… Well, not necessarily. There is a difference between Fragrance-Free and Scent-free / unscented. This may seem a bit confusing, so allow us to break it down. Unscented products often contain chemicals that eliminate odors. All of the ingredients used to make a hair care product — whether natural or synthetic — have an aroma. Not all aromas are made-equal! Some aromas, though natural, can be very unpleasant. That’s why special fragrance chemicals are added to neutralize the aroma. These chemicals are considered unscented.
On the other hand, it’s possible for a fragrance-free item to have a scent, even if no fragrance chemicals have been added to it. For example, our ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel both have Aloe Vera as a primary ingredient. This scent comes naturally from the plant, so products that use aloe vera can be fragrance-free and still have a noticeable pleasant scent.
Does Fragrance-Free Impact Product Performance?
Great question! Not at all. While the formula has changed to remove fragrance chemicals and chemical compounds, it does not change the effectiveness of these best sellers. In fact, without the fragrance, you may find that the products have a longer shelf-life.
What does change about these fragrance-free products is the way they look. Our Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel may appear to have more bubbles and be more opaque. But, rest assured, the performance stays the same.
