So . . . what are Irish curls anyway?
Irish curls may have been blowing up on social media lately but are really not something new. Defined as textured tresses with inconsistent curl types, Irish curls can be challenging to care for. Often the top layer, sometimes called the canopy layer, is nearly straight. Meanwhile, the layers underneath are usually more wavy or curly.
Do you have to be Irish to have Irish curls?
Short answer: nope! If you have a big difference in the curl types between various layers of your hair, then you are probably in the Irish curls’ club. So then, what’s with the name? Well, many people with Irish heritage have this type of hair and the name just blew up on social media.
How do you style Irish curls?
Having one type of curls or waves can take plenty of time and effort to figure out, but with Irish curls you are figuring out how to create a cohesive look with at least two different curl types. While it may feel a little tricky at first, we’ll share a styling method that addresses how to style both the straighter canopy layer as well as the wavier layers underneath.

The Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel goes in next. Glaze it in and then scrunch focusing on extra scrunching for the canopy layer.
Diffuse until fully dry and enjoy consistently bouncy and beautiful Irish curls!
Now that you have a solid styling routine to achieve gorgeous results, let’s talk about protecting Irish curls overnight. For those with Irish curls, the front and top pieces are often prone to frizz and those pieces rubbing against a regular pillowcase will lead to a major frizz fest in the morning. Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.
