When it comes to curly hair, most of us focus on styling products, tools, and curl routines—but the scalp often gets overlooked. We spend so much time thinking about how our curls look that we forget the foundation those curls grow from. Well, we are here to shed light on what healthy scalp care looks like, and provide some simple steps of consideration to include scalp care in your weekly routine.
Even if your curls look ah-mazing, a neglected scalp can silently sabotage your hair. A healthy scalp:
Supports strong, resilient strands. Curly hair is naturally 30–40% weaker than straight hair, so giving your scalp care attention can prevent breakage.
Helps you avoid dry patches, itchiness, or that greasy-but-dry feeling that makes your hair hard to manage.
Allows your styles to last longer with fewer refreshes.
Reduces the risk of thinning or shedding over time.
So, let’s get down to it- to know your scalp is begging for some extra TLC, you first must know what a healthy scalp looks like. Here are a few things you should be looking for when it comes to a healthy scalp!
A Healthy Scalp Should Be:
Clean and free of buildup from products, oil, or dead skin.
Have an even tone, with no redness, irritation, or inflammation.
Feel comfortable, without itchiness, tightness, or tenderness.
Smell neutral, without unpleasant odors.
Support strong, consistent hair growth at the roots.
If you notice persistent issues—like constant flakes, redness, or hair shedding—it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist to rule out any underlying conditions.
A critical part of healthy scalp care is awareness! When going through your daily or weekly styling routine, make sure you take a few extra minutes to get up close and personal! Here are few things you will want to consider:
Part and peek – Use a comb or your fingers to part your hair in different sections. A mirror or phone camera helps you see clearly.
Check the color – Look for any redness, blotchiness, or irritation. Healthy scalp skin should be even in tone.
Spot flakes or buildup – A few flakes here and there are normal, but constant flakiness or waxy buildup means your scalp might be out of balance.
Notice bumps or scabs – These can result from scratching, irritation, or product overload.
Feel it out – Is your scalp tight, dry, or oily shortly after washing? A healthy scalp feels comfortable, not high-maintenance.
Examine your roots – Strong, consistent hair growth indicates a thriving scalp. Thinning patches might signal that more care is needed.
Gently tug a strand – Hair should stay anchored. If strands come out easily or in large amounts, it may be time to check in with a professional.
Just like plants need healthy soil and water to strengthen and hydrate their roots, your curl follicles need the same attention. Proper cleansing is crucial, especially for curly hair. Certified cosmetologists recommend washing your scalp 2–3 times before moving to conditioning steps. This ensures dry skin, buildup, and clogged follicles are removed, giving your curls a fresh start.
Consider the pH of your shampoo
Use a shampoo with a pH between 4.5–6 to protect your scalp’s natural barrier and microbiome. Products outside this range can strip natural oils, irritate the scalp, and even weaken hair strands. Our Curl Renew & Restore Gentle Cleansing Rinse is perfect for weekly use—it’s low-suds, detangles as you wash, and keeps curls nourished.
Drink Up!
Hydration is just as important, when it comes to healthy scalp care. Make sure you are drinking enough water daily and wetting your scalp 1-2 times a week. For good measure, massage your scalp! It not only feels amazing, but it also improves blood flow, encouraging healthy hair growth. Pairing a scalp brush with a hydrating product, like our Aloe Vera Curl Primer, can help moisturize, soothe, and prep your scalp for styling. Its cooling, slippery consistency makes application easy and leaves your scalp refreshed.
The secret to thriving curls is a healthy foundation. Inspecting, cleansing, and hydrating your scalp weekly can prevent issues before they start, keep your hair strong, and make your curls truly shine from root to tip.
Don’t let your scalp be the underdog. Start giving it the attention it deserves this week—inspect, cleanse, and hydrate. Your future self will thank you!

Do TréLuxe products work on permed hair?
TréLuxe products are made from gentle, natural ingredients and are safe on chemically-treated strands. Originally formulated with natural curls in mind, our products can hydrate, define and enhance curls of any kind.
Do you offer fragrance-free products?
We do! Three of our most popular styling products: ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.
Are there videos/tutorials of people using your products?
Yes, we’ve got a few different ways you can take in useful videos and tutorials that include the products in action.
We recently launched an incredible resource! It's called ReelCurls University and is full of helpful how-to videos to provide education and inspiration for curlies, coilies and wavies. We’d highly recommend checking it out!
TréLuxe social media pages share videos of people with all different types of textured hair. Check us out on Instagram (@discovertreluxe) or Facebook (discoverTreLuxe) for tons of helpful content.
