Do your curtains need to be satin, too? We get it! Your curl care to do list already feels long. Well, today we want to help you focus on scalp care, the canvas for healthy curls. Don’t worry, curly, we’ll help you weave it right into your regular routine, so it does not feel like a whole new box to check. We’ve created a super helpful video to guide you through the two basics of scalp care!

  1. How to regularly check for any issues hiding beneath your curly crown.

  2. Using scalp-focused products to consistently and effectively care for your scalp.

Watch as Zoe shares simple and effective methods to make sure your scalp is healthy and thriving!

Now that we’ve seen everyday scalp care in action let’s walk through a few solutions to common scalp problems together!

My scalp is dry and flaky but I have curly hair — what should I do?

Let’s be real, nobody wants to see flakes in their curls, coils or waves. BUT a few flakes here and there are actually pretty normal, especially during the dry winter months. Sticking with these wash day techniques will hydrate your scalp and cut down on pesky flakes.

  1. Don’t skimp on regular cleansing
We know there is debate on how often to cleanse in the curl community and some opt to co-wash but we recommend a solid cleanse at least once per week. The key here is to really focus on your scalp without stripping your strands of their moisture. The Curl Renew & Restore Gentle Cleansing Rinse will lift debris while leaving the pH balance of your hair intact. For more key deets on the washing step be sure to check out this post Curls 101: How to cleanse curls, coils and waves!

  2. Scalp brush for the win
Flakes will be forced to flee with the luxe Scalp Massager! Flexible silicone bristles provide a relaxing experience and the cool green color brings a sense of calm. Use circular motions with the scalp massager during the cleansing step to break up build up and flakes. Bonus: It will add a spa vibe to every wash day!

  3. Spa-like treatment for your scalp
Now that you’ve sent those pesky flakes down the drain, it’s time to hydrate your dry scalp. The Aloe Vera Curl Primer is the one to reach for! Apply this plant-based product to your dry scalp and add a shower cap to lock in heat and moisture for 1-2 minutes and then rinse it out. The primer will soothe your scalp and bring much needed hydration!

Just a heads up, curlies, these methods will help with some flakiness but if you are experiencing persistent flakiness, we recommend that you consult a dermatologist for the best next steps.

How can I reduce scalp buildup without stripping my curls?

Regular cleansing using the Curl Renew & Restore Gentle Cleansing Rinse along with the Scalp Brush are a dynamic duo to fight product buildup. The cleansing rinse is intentionally designed to maintain the pH balance and moisture of delicate curls, coils and waves. While the cleanser is in your tresses, use gentle circular motions to break up the buildup. Sometimes curlies experience buildup and matting in one spot more than others such as the back of the head. If this is the case, focus the scalp massaging more in that area than in others. Consistent cleansing and scalp massaging will leave your scalp clean and your curls thriving!

Why does my scalp itch when I wear my curls natural?

The most common reason is that it’s your scalp telling you it’s time for a wash day. Long-lasting curls are amazing and we love helping people extend time needed between wash days as it saves time and money. If you made it to Day 6 between washes, that’s awesome! Now a good rule of thumb is to provide your tresses and your scalp with a solid wash day at least once per week.

Another reason that you may be experiencing an itchy scalp could be due to sensitivities to products. We had some curlies request fragrance-free options and we listened by creating them! If you are regularly cleansing it is possible that product sensitivities could be causing itchiness. Try swapping out your regular fan fave products for fragrance-free versions!

FAQs

Do TréLuxe products work on permed hair?

TréLuxe products are made from gentle, natural ingredients and are safe on chemically-treated strands. Originally formulated with natural curls in mind, our products can hydrate, define and enhance curls of any kind.

Do you offer fragrance-free products?

We do! Three of our most popular styling products: ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.

Are there videos/tutorials of people using your products?

Yes, we’ve got a few different ways you can take in useful videos and tutorials that include the products in action.
