The sun is shining, your kids are ready to jump in to swim—and instead of joy, you feel that familiar hesitation, knowing one swim can mean dry, tangled curls, long detangling sessions, and hair that takes days to recover. Sure you can search all over online for answers but that may leave you more stumped than ever on how to swim with curls.
Cut through the noise and take in sound advice based on wisdom from TréLuxe Co-founder, Cortney Sigilai. Swimming with curls brings on all types of questions and Cortney has you more than covered with expert answers. Dive in for practical tips, so you can enjoy the water with well cared for curls! And if diving in and enjoying the waves with your kiddos causes some frizz, it’s ok. They’ll remember the good times and not the family’s perfect hair!
Have a family deep conditioning party before you jump in to swim! Grab some shower caps and apply the Ultra Moisturizing Deep Conditioner to everyone’s tresses. Let the Deep Conditioner stay on for 15-20 minutes. This feels like the perfect time for a family dance session, the sillier the better. With nourishing ingredients such as oat milk, banana extract, and turmeric, the Deep Conditioner brings balanced moisture to textured tresses.
Bonus: It has a refreshing scent of seagrass, green tea, and a light note of ginger. It smells utterly amazing!
Swim caps can be a great option, especially for families that love to be in the water often. Ensure you wear swim caps that fit well and silicone caps can be ideal options. The struggle can be real real trying to get a latex swim cap on a crown of wild curls, especially if that crown belongs to a wiggly toddler. Unlike latex, silicone swim caps create great slip, allowing you to comfortably put on caps without tangling your hair, or bringing on meltdowns for your littles.
Since no swim cap is completely resistant, make sure you lightly condition the ends of your hair (about the first 5 inches), then wet the rest of your hair. This will create a vacuum which will suck the cap closer to your head, and if chlorine water does enter the cap the water has already filled your hair shaft and the conditioner has sealed/coated the weakest point of your hair strands.
Yup, those swim caps can go flying in the wind and the best laid swim curl care plans can go out the window when a bunch of kids are having a blast at the beach all day. Just let the good times roll and don’t feel overwhelmed as all of the curls, coils and waves look increasingly out of control, envision a bunch of bird nests and then throw some seaweed on top for color. You’ve got this, as long as you have the Aloe Vera Curl Primer in your massive mom bag. The Curl Primer cuts down detangling time by up to 70%! Multiply that by a family of four and you just saved some major time! Here’s what to do ASAP when swimming fun turns quickly into a tangled curl mess.
Grab the Curl Primer and start with a dime-sized amount.
Evenly distribute the Curl Primer through wet hair.
Use fingers or a wide tooth comb to work through pesky tangles.
Repeat on all your kids and don’t forget the little one lol.
Once the tangles are out of the way, rinse your tresses under lukewarm water for 1-2 minutes and then wash to remove chlorine, sand, and any other random things that end up in your kiddos’ tresses. The Curl Renew & Restore Gentle Cleansing Rinse will gently lift debris from delicate curls but will maintain the natural pH balance of your hair. If your family can’t stay away from swimming, the Cleansing Rinse can be used on a daily basis without drying out curls, coils or waves. Packed with slippery elm extract, coconut milk, and aloe vera, the Cleansing Rinse will provide curl protection and moisture with every wash. Um, short answer? Yes! A day swimming in the sun at the beach or the pool can dry out your hair, so treating those freshly cleansed tresses to a leave-in conditioner is essential! Here’s what to do:
Rinse with warm water for 30-60 seconds.
Reach for Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner and apply a generous amount to your hands.
Work conditioner through hair from ends to roots.
Rinse hair and reapply conditioner.
Repeat step #3 and do not rinse.
Style as desired.

Do TréLuxe products work on permed hair?
TréLuxe products are made from gentle, natural ingredients and are safe on chemically-treated strands. Originally formulated with natural curls in mind, our products can hydrate, define and enhance curls of any kind.
Do you offer fragrance-free products?
We do! Three of our most popular styling products: ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.
