Tips from a stylist plus video tutorials!

Embracing your natural curls has plenty of twists and turns and can feel downright challenging sometimes. Now, let’s say you are a sleep-deprived curly mama with little time for hair care, you might just run into a monster knot, eek! Tangles seem to strike all types of textured hair from waves to coils and can even cause tears for the littlest curlies. But don’t stress, today we’ve brought together valuable info to help everyone in our #TréLuxeTribe get in a better rhythm of detangling. From pro stylist tips to video tutorials that show the top two tangle-taming products in action, this is a must-read for anyone who wants to improve their detangling game for good!

Let’s meet pro stylist Ja’Nera Mitchom! She is the owner of Curls Unlimited salon in Atlanta and does beautiful work on all types of textured tresses from loose waves to tight curls. Be sure to check out Ja’Nera’s artistry on Instagram! We’re super grateful for the wisdom and expertise on detangling that Ja’Nera has shared with us for this Q-and-A!

QWhat products and processes would you recommend for people to detangle their hair at home?

A
To detangle hair at home, I recommend working in sections on soaking wet hair with plenty of conditioner to create slip and minimize breakage. This method helps you manage the hair more easily and ensures a thorough detangle without causing unnecessary tension or damage.

Packed with nourishing botanical ingredients, the Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner is an excellent option for slip. Watch it work its detangling magic in this video!

Q: Are there any tools that you think make the detangling process go more smoothly?

A
Yes, definitely a spray bottle and a detangling brush are must-haves. For wavy hair, I prefer using a Wet Brush to gently detangle. For curly and coily hair, I recommend the Felicia Leatherwood Brush With The Best brush, because of their sturdiness and ability to glide through thick textures without causing breakage. Did you know that the Continuous Mist Spray Bottle makes life easier? It takes less pressing than regular spray bottles. Each press gives you 1.1 seconds of continuous spray!

Q: Are there any products, processes or tools that a person with textured hair should avoid for detangling?

A
For all hair types, I don’t recommend using a Denman brush for detangling, as it’s designed more for curl definition than for removing tangles. I also prefer detangling brushes over wide-tooth combs because brushes are more effective at catching and removing smaller knots. Additionally, you should never detangle from the roots—always start from the ends and work your way up to avoid breakage and minimize discomfort.

Q: Is there anything else that you wish more people knew about detangling?

A
For all hair types, it’s important to detangle on soaking wet hair with plenty of conditioner to provide slip and reduce breakage. While this applies to everyone, it’s especially crucial for tight curls, which should always be detangled in sections to make the process easier and more effective.

By now, you’ve probably realized that the Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner is a must-have for detangling, but heads up we have another amazing product that can stop tangles in their tracks!

The Aloe Vera Curl Primer earns coveted shower space as it is incredibly versatile and proven to cut down detangling time by 70 percent! It can be used at different steps in the curl care process based on your needs for the day such as a pre-style primer, a pre-poo detangler and a curl clumping refresher. Watch how to use it for finger detangling in this video!

Whether you picked up some key wisdom from extraordinary stylist Ja’Nera or learned something new from the how-to videos, we hope that you’ll walk away today with new confidence when it comes to detangling. The curl journey isn’t always easy but with these tangle-fighting tips, you’ll keep on moving fearlessly forward!

FAQs

Do TréLuxe products work on permed hair?

TréLuxe products are made from gentle, natural ingredients and are safe on chemically-treated strands. Originally formulated with natural curls in mind, our products can hydrate, define and enhance curls of any kind.

Do you offer fragrance-free products?

We do! Three of our most popular styling products: ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.

Are there videos/tutorials of people using your products?

Yes, we’ve got a few different ways you can take in useful videos and tutorials that include the products in action.
We recently launched an incredible resource! It's called ReelCurls University and is full of helpful how-to videos to provide education and inspiration for curlies, coilies and wavies. We’d highly recommend checking it out!
TréLuxe social media pages share videos of people with all different types of textured hair. Check us out on Instagram (@discovertreluxe) or Facebook (discoverTreLuxe) for tons of helpful content.
The monthly newsletter and weekly Monday Motivation emails often contain videos and tutorials as well! We also have bi-monthly blogs that we post on our website, which take a deep dive into many different topics, including how to use the products!
