We are here to help you figure Out ‘What in the Frizz’ is Going On!

Let’s be real: frizz is basically the +1 to every curly girl’s party. Whether it's a fluffy crown, some sneaky flyaways, or full-on fuzz, frizz shows up when it wants—and usually uninvited.

But here’s the truth: frizz isn’t the enemy — it’s often a sign that your curls are craving something: moisture, definition or just a little extra TLC. The good news? You don’t have to fight it—you can understand it, embrace it, and manage it with the right care (and products that actually get curls).

Let’s break it down, curlfriend-style. 💁🏽‍♀️

First Things First: What Is Frizz?

Frizz happens when the outer layer of your hair (aka the cuticle) lifts and lets moisture in. The result? Disrupted curl patterns, less definition, more fluff, floof and poof. But not all frizz is the same—and knowing what type you’re dealing with helps you handle it better.

The 4 Types of Frizz (And What You Can Do About Them)

1. Surface Frizz

  • Looks like: A halo of fuzz on top of your curls.
  • Why it happens: Dryness, humidity, or rubbing your hair with a towel or pillowcase.
  • How to minimize it: Use a satin pillowcase when you sleep, and blot your hair with a microfiber towel or cotton tee instead of rubbing when styling your hair. Add a lightweight leave-in conditioner to smooth and hydrate. We have a BEAUTIFUL 100% Satin Pillowcase if you are in need of one!

Try this: Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner — packed with coconut milk and slippery elm, it smooths the cuticle and keeps surface frizz from stealing the spotlight.

2. Halo Frizz

  • Looks like: Flyaways and frizz mostly at the crown of your head.
  • Why it happens: New growth, breakage or not enough moisture at the roots.
  • How to minimize it: Massage the product evenly from roots to ends. Avoid aggressive brushing—use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers instead.

Try this:

3. In-Curl Frizz

  • Looks like: Frizz inside your curl clumps—aka curls that look a little unraveled.
  • Why it happens: Not enough hydration or hold, or applying products unevenly.
  • How to minimize it: Apply your stylers in soaking wet hair to lock in moisture.

Try this:

4. Frizz at the Ends

  • Looks like: Frayed, dry or poufy ends that won’t stay defined.
  • Why it happens: Heat damage, split ends or curls in need of hydration.
  • How to minimize it: Snip split ends regularly, when the seasons change, get your hair trimmed (your curls will thank you).

Try this:

☀️Frizz in the Summer

Sun’s out, curls out—and so is the frizz. Heat and UV rays can dry out your strands, making them more prone to puffing up. Did you know that the Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel can help protect your curls against UV rays? Sure can! Because of the tomato extract and the 360° Curl Complex, your curls can enjoy the sun without a care in the world.

Your summer curl survival kit:

❄️Frizz in the Winter

Cold weather + dry indoor heat = thirsty curls and static central. Winter frizz tends to be drier and more brittle.

Winter-proof your curls:

  • Deep condition more often.
  • Use creamy leave-ins and oils to lock in moisture.
  • Skip harsh shampoos.

Try:

😴 Frizz While You Sleep

Beauty sleep should help your curls, not turn them into a frizz fest.

Nighttime tips:

  • Sleep on satin or silk.
  • Pineapple your curls loosely on top of your head.
  • Use a bit of leave-in or serum to protect overnight.

Try:

  • Untie the Knot before bed to soften and prevent friction.
  • ReFlex in the morning to refresh and revive sleepy curls.

Real Talk: Frizz Isn't the Enemy

FAQs

Do TréLuxe products work on permed hair?

TréLuxe products are made from gentle, natural ingredients and are safe on chemically-treated strands. Originally formulated with natural curls in mind, our products can hydrate, define and enhance curls of any kind.

Do you offer fragrance-free products?

We do! Three of our most popular styling products: ReFlex Curl Styling Serum and Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel, and Untie the Knot Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, come in fragrance-free options. We certainly understand that fragrances can be very subjective, and we’re working on developing more fragrance-free product offerings in the future.
Please do note that “fragrance-free” does not always equal “scent-free.” Fragrance-free means that there are no additive fragrances on top of the existing ingredients. However, there is still a scent as a result of the mixing together of all the ingredients.

Are there videos/tutorials of people using your products?

Yes, we’ve got a few different ways you can take in useful videos and tutorials that include the products in action.
We recently launched an incredible resource! It's called ReelCurls University and is full of helpful how-to videos to provide education and inspiration for curlies, coilies and wavies. We’d highly recommend checking it out!
